Ford for Dengue Czar
Ford for Dengue Czar
Tulsi Gabbard has been listening to some smart people. Her recommendations to Gov. Ige are excellent and will aid us in getting rid of the dark cloud of dengue that hangs over Kona.
I recommend Brenda Ford as the Dengue Fever Czar that Gabbard proposed. Ford lives right in dengue fever central and is an effective, tenacious, hard worker for the good of the people. I recommend that people contact the governor and request that he appoint Ford as the Dengue Fever Czar. Kona’s wet season will start in March or April and if dengue is still here, it will mushroom and likely become endemic.

Ige should heed Gabbard’s request
The governor should heed Rep. Tulsi Gabbard’s call for a state of emergency to combat dengue on the Big Island. It will release funds needed for a serious long-term abatement program instead of the shortsighted efforts going on now.
The threat of mosquito-borne viruses is not going away and will continue to hang over our heads in the long term. The far worse headline would be if dengue becomes endemic here or if Zika starts to happen. As for tourism, it will give people a sense of security knowing that something significant is being done to take care of these potentially deadly mosquitoes that could inflict Zika on Hawaii next. The CDC just issued a travel advisory about Zika in Samoa now. It’s just a Hawaiian Airlines’ flight away.

Do-gooders misguided with homeless help
Nothing infuriates me more than do-gooders trying to resolve issues such as the homeless situation by suggesting we build shelters for them.
For one thing, those who are homeless are there for many reasons and one of them is they don’t want to work for a living. Nothing is free and someone, usually the hard-working taxpayers, are the ones ending up paying the services for these bums.
I, for one, would rather Sen. Josh Green and those who push the bill forward to foot the bill out of their own pockets, not the taxpayers. Of course, those who are mentally ill are out there as well but they need a different kind of assistance. We cannot possibly fix and provide homes for all of them and those who come from outside states should be allowed to continue to camp out under our brilliant skies until it begins to rain and then they can go home.
I worked all my life to put a roof over my family and food on the table. I don’t believe in free handouts. I donate every year to worthy causes of my own choosing.

Tourists worried about traveling to dengue-infested island
We are residents from Idaho. Feb. 15, we had scheduled our annual two weeks in Kona. We are very concerned about the outbreak of dengue fever and are strongly considering cancellation.
Your state government needs to act on this now reassuring everyone that all precautions are being taken. Please support Tulsi Gabbard’s request for a state of emergency.
